Rigzone & The Right Group’s Latest Employee Engagement Survey Indicates Strong Industry Loyalty Despite Overwhelming Dissatisfaction with Current Benefits & Training Opportunities

March 16, 2015—In spite of recent turmoil in the industry, oil and gas professionals maintain a strong sense of loyalty to the industry, according to Rigzone and The Right Group’s latest employee engagement survey. Ninety-two percent of oil and gas professionals indicated that they are proud to be a part of the oil and gas workforce, with seventy-five percent responding that they are proud to tell people that they work for their current company.

Yet, despite professionals’ overwhelming devotion to the oil and gas industry, they appear to be less than impressed with what companies are offering them in the form of benefits, with half of professionals surveyed indicating that they are dissatisfied with their current benefit packages. This suggests that, if companies want to recruit and retain the best talent, perhaps a good start would be to reconsider their present benefit offerings. In fact, compensation and benefits remain the primary consideration for professionals who are trying to decide whether they should stay at their current organisation or look to move elsewhere, with a strong majority (77%) responding that these two elements factor significantly into their decision-making process.

While salary and benefits remain top-of-mind, strong personal and professional development opportunities also appear to be of meaningful importance to professionals. Nearly half of professionals (49%) indicate that they would be willing to move for greater opportunities for advancement and approximately forty percent (39%) responded that they would be willing to move for more learning opportunities.

Despite employees’ strong interest in professional development, there appears to be a perceived lack of training and career progression within the organisations they work for. Only forty-four percent of professionals surveyed feel that their current company has paved a clear career path for them, with slightly more than half (52%) agreeing that there is equal opportunity for advancement within their organisation.

About the Survey

During the months of Dec 2014 to Jan 2015, in a first of its kind initiative, Rigzone and The Right Group surveyed oil and gas professionals in the APAC region about what it was like working in the oil and gas industry. Over 500 professionals responded to the survey, with 40% working onshore, 33% working in metro/head offices and 27% working offshore.

Full survey results were presented at the 2015 Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibitions & Conference on March 12.
